Piscinas das Salinas and promenade in Câmara de Lobos
Câmara de Lobos, a charming fishing village about 8 km from the capital, will soon boast a new promenade and a bathing complex called Piscinas das Salinas.
Work has also been done in Largo da República to give the beachside area a complete facelift.
Ribeira Brava seafront
Ribeira Brava sits at the mouth of an imposing valley on the west coast. Its seafront, bathed by the immense ocean, has now been renovated and enlarged. There will soon be a magnificent seaside promenade and belvedere.
Improvements in Lagoa
In Ponta do Sol, several improvements have been made to the landscaping and facilities at Lagoa. Two pavilions have been built nearby, one with leisure services and the other for ecotourism and environmental education using the natural habitat of the lagoon and other Madeiran fauna and flora. The brackish waters of the lagoon are a natural refuge for many water and mud birds that stop over in the region during migration.
New sea front in Madalena do Mar
Thanks to the building of a new sea front in this town on Madeira's west coast, it is now much easier to walk to the beach and there are also sports facilities and restaurants. On the way to the sea, visitors will now find 700 square metres of sundeck, a pier and two access ramps to the rocks. There is also a playground and beach volleyball courts.
New Marina in Lugar de Baixo
Ponta do Sol, a municipality on the west of Madeira, is now even more attractive to tourists after the construction of the marina.
It was built to encourage the development of water sports and will also have a promenade running from the Lugar de Baixo to the Ponta do Sol sea fronts.
The marina has 297 moorings for vessels from eight to 25 metres, a waiting dock, a ramp for beaching small boats, parking, restaurants, shops, nautical facilities, a playing field, a gym, swimming pools and a bathing area.
New marina for Calheta
Sunny Calheta, already an excellent place for pleasure boating and water sports, is now even more attractive.
The marina has helped to make the most of Calheta's potential, converting its coast into a charming leisure area.
It is located about 14 miles west of Funchal and has berths for some 300 yachts from six to 20 metres. It is the second largest marina in Madeira.
The marina also boasts a refuelling and wastewater disposal dock, a ramp for hoisting small boats, 400 paid parking places and nautical facilities that include the Calheta Yacht Club.
Law enforcement has not been forgotten and includes Customs, Immigration and Maritime Police and National Guard offices.
It is surrounded by about two hectares of spectacular green areas and some retail outlets have moved in to make the complex even more attractive.
Manmade beach in Calheta
Calheta has done a lot to improve its sea front and has designed a beach whose main attribute is yellow sand, which only occurs naturally in Madeira at Prainha beach, in Caniçal.
Calheta beach can expect to welcome plenty of visitors on the warmest days of the year, as it is close to the new marina and has an area of 28,550 square metres with some 7,300 square metres of sundecks. New Marina in Lugar de Baixo

Harbour and heliport for Porto Moniz
The sea front at Porto Moniz, on Madeira's north coast, has also been undergoing some improvements, making this area, already so popular thanks to its natural swimming pools, an even more attractive place to visit.
Porto Moniz now has a harbour and a heliport, which can be used in a variety of situations, such as for tourist trips or emergency airlifts.
The harbour has a 120-metre breakwater and an area has also been set aside for water sports.
A Living Science Centre, of great scientific and cultural interest, and racing pools have also been opened there.
A renovated attraction was also re-opened in the municipality in July. The Seixal natural swimming pools have been restored, substantially improving the surrounding landscape.
Praia da Lagoa in Porto da Cruz
Yet another modern, state-of-the-art bathing complex, called Praia da Lagoa, was opened in June on the north coast of Madeira, in Porto da Cruz.
The work done on this black-sand beach included the construction of new accesses to the sea, a sundeck, a food court and locker rooms.
Ribeira do Faial Bathing Complex
This complex, which is also north of Funchal, includes a large natural swimming pool, restaurants, locker rooms, a nursing station and vast sunbathing areas.
It also boasts a sand playing field and a multi-purpose pavilion which has been built for other sports.
São Jorge Bathing Complex
This new complex on the north coast has three swimming pools and a restaurant.
It commands an excellent view of the fabulous surrounding landscape that rises up from the sea to the verdant valleys and mountains above.
São Vicente has a new bathing area
The new bathing area in São Vicente was opened on 30 September and a wall on the sea side will now protect Fajã da Areia. This area is very popular with surfers and so support facilities have also been built for water sports, along with an outdoor café, a subdeck and a promenade between Varadouro and Baía dos Juncos.
Ponta Delgada Bathing Complex
Ponta Delgada, a northern town "resting on the sea", now has a new facility that includes two swimming pools, sunbathing areas, restaurants, locker rooms, first aid facilities and a breakwater that has resulted in a beach in the small bay.
Fun in the waster on Madeira's east coast
The recently opened Ribeira da Boaventura bathing complex in Santa Cruz includes swimming pools, sundecks, locker rooms and an outdoor café. A small, sheltered basin has been built between the nautical area and the swimming pools, with safe access to the sea. For ocean lovers, there is a pier at the river mouth.
Madeira's own waterslide park, Aquaparque, will be opening in October near the Ribeira da Boaventura Bathing Complex.
With a capacity for over 1,000 people, the park is yet another recreational centre for holidaymakers in the archipelago.
The vast area will boast five toboggan rides and four fast slides with entry pools. There will also be two swimming pools, one of which will be for children (Aqualândia Infantil), a lazy river running round the pools, a bar and locker rooms.
Accesses to the beach and the surrounding landscape have also been made improved at Reis Magos Beach in Caniço. |
